Sinchon & Ewha: Seoul's Original Student Quarter
Before Hongdae there was Sinchon. Seodaemun-gu still has the universities, the cheap late-night food, and a few restaurants that have outlasted every trend around them.

Sinchon was Seoul's student district for thirty years before Hongdae took the crown. Yonsei, Ewha Womans University, and Sogang are all within a few hundred meters of each other here, and the strip between them — Yeonsero, now largely pedestrianized — still runs on cheap food, late hours, and enormous drinking sets.
Seodaemun-gu around it is quieter and older: Ansan's forest paths, Independence Park, and residential streets that never got redeveloped.
What to see
- Yeonsero and the Yonsei campus. The university's old stone buildings and the tree-lined main avenue are worth the ten-minute walk from the station, especially in autumn.
- Ewha Womans University. The ECC — a glass canyon cut into the ground by Dominique Perrault — is one of the best pieces of modern architecture in Seoul, and it's free to walk through.
- Ansan Jarak-gil. A flat, wooden-decked trail that loops around Ansan mountain with views over the whole northwest of the city. It's easy enough for anyone and one of the most underrated walks in Seoul.
- Seodaemun Prison History Hall. A serious, sobering museum in the Japanese colonial-era prison.
What to eat
Sinchon's food is built around students, which means volume and value, but the district also holds a few genuinely old, genuinely serious shops:
- Grilled pork and galbi. The oldest grill houses near Yeonhui-dong and Sinchon have been running for decades and still charcoal-grill everything.
- Dak-naejang and gopchang. Chicken and pork offal stews — heavy, spicy, and the classic drinking food of this district.
- Jjajangmyeon and jjamppong. Yeonhui-dong is a well-known pocket for Chinese-Korean cooking in Seoul.
- Traditional tteok and hangwa. Seodaemun holds one of the master-designated Korean rice-cake and confection makers — a very different, very quiet kind of eating.
- Izakaya and Japanese. Yeonhui-dong and Yeonnam's western edge have a dense, well-priced Japanese scene.
How to plan it
Sinchon works best as a half-day: Ewha's ECC and the campus in the afternoon, the Ansan trail at sunset, and dinner on Yeonsero after dark. If you're coming from Hongdae it's one subway stop or a fifteen-minute walk.
Each restaurant below has a video on its EatHub page — worth a look here, since several of the best places in the district are up a staircase or behind an unmarked door.
Practical tips
- Getting there: Sinchon Station (Line 2), Ewha Womans University Station (Line 2), Hongik University Station (Line 2 / AREX) if you're arriving from the airport.
- Yeonsero is car-free on weekends, which turns it into a street-performance zone.
- Yonsei and Ewha campuses are open to the public during the day; be quiet around exam periods.
- Sinchon eats late. Many places don't get busy until 8pm and run past midnight.
Choose a restaurant below, then walk the campuses first — the food gets better after dark anyway.
