Gyeongju (경주) was the capital of the Silla kingdom for nearly a thousand years, and it wears that history openly: grass-covered royal tombs rise like green hills in the middle of town, ancient observatories and temples sit among the rice fields, and the whole area is often called a "museum without walls." It's Korea's single best place to feel the depth of its past — and a pleasant, low-key place to eat between the sights.

The Silla sights

Gyeongju's landmarks are spread across a green, flat, bike-friendly landscape:

  • Royal tombs (Daereungwon). Clustered grassy burial mounds you can walk among; one, Cheonmachong, is open inside.
  • Cheomseongdae. A 7th-century stone observatory, one of the oldest surviving in East Asia.
  • Bulguksa and Seokguram. The UNESCO-listed temple and grotto in the hills east of town — the crowning achievements of Silla Buddhist art.
  • Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond. Stunning after dark, when the reconstructed pavilions reflect in the water.

The old royal-tomb area is the green heart of the city, and many of the best places to eat sit just around it.

What to eat in Gyeongju

Gyeongju's food is honest, regional Korean cooking:

  • Ssambap (쌈밥). A spread of leaves, banchan, and grilled or braised meat to wrap yourself — generous and a Gyeongju favorite near the tomb park.
  • Hwangnam-bbang (황남빵). The city's famous red-bean pastry, a soft cake filled with sweet adzuki — the classic edible souvenir, sold fresh by the box.
  • Home-style and grilled meat. Long-running baekban spots and pork-grill houses feed locals and travelers alike.
  • Beopju and local drink. Gyeongju has a heritage of traditional rice wine to go with the history.

How to plan a Gyeongju day

Gyeongju is made for a relaxed pace. Rent a bike or walk the central tomb area in the morning, take a bus or taxi out to Bulguksa, and return for Wolji Pond at night. Eat a ssambap lunch near the tombs and pick up hwangnam-bbang on the way out. The city is compact enough that you're never far from both a sight and a meal.

To plan, open the EatHub map, see which restaurants are near the tomb park or your route, and check the menu and video first. Some of the restaurants below have a video on their EatHub page so you can preview them before you go.

Practical tips

  • Wolji Pond after dark. The night lighting is the most photogenic moment in Gyeongju — save it for evening.
  • Hwangnam-bbang is the souvenir. Buy it fresh and eat it within a day or two for the best texture.
  • Bulguksa needs half a day. It's outside the center; plan transport and time.
  • Getting there. Singyeongju Station puts you on the KTX about two hours from Seoul; the historic center is a short ride away.

Gyeongju lets you eat your way through a thousand years of history. See the tombs and temples, settle in for ssambap, and use the list below to find your table on the map.
