Gimpo (김포) lies just west of Seoul, where the Han River meets the sea. Most visitors know it only for its airport. It also has fishing ports, old military forts and quiet river scenery, all within an easy day trip of the capital.

What to see

  • Daemyeong Port (대명항) is a working fishing harbour with a seafood market and waterfront walks.
  • Gimpo Hamsang Park (김포함상공원) is a retired naval ship you can walk through, right by the port.
  • Munsusanseong (문수산성) is a hillside fortress wall with river views.
  • Deokpojin (덕포진) is a historic coastal fort site, with a small education museum nearby.
  • Jeonryuri Port (전류리포구) is a peaceful river port and the home of local fresh-fish restaurants.

  • Junghwa Yori Taehwagwan (중화요리태화관) is a Chinese-Korean restaurant (₩₩) in Bukbyeon-dong.

How to plan the day

Gimpo is spread out, so group the stops by area and use a taxi or car between them. The distances below are straight-line estimates, so allow extra time on the road.

  • Morning on the west coast. Daemyeong Port, Gimpo Hamsang Park and Deokpojin are within about 1 km of each other. See the boats and the warship, then walk over to the fort. None of the restaurants in this guide are here, so eat before you set out or browse the port's seafood market.
  • Lunch by the river. Head about 12 km north-east to Jeonryuri Port for sashimi at Jeonryuri Sarangho.
  • Dinner in town. Galbi Bonjil Premium and Sojjak in Janggi-dong are 5 to 6 km from Jeonryuri. Bukbyeon-dong, about 4 km further east, has the other sashimi house and the Chinese-Korean restaurant. Odaltong Bunsik closes at 18:30, so stop there earlier in the day.
  • Munsusanseong sits in the far north-west, about 10 km from Deokpojin and further from everything else. Swap it in for Deokpojin, or save it for another day.

Why come here

Gimpo feels different from Seoul. The air smells of the river and the sea, the pace is slower, and the food leans towards fresh fish and hearty grilled meat. It suits travellers who have already seen the big Seoul sights and want an easy, low-key day out with a local flavour. Weekdays are quieter than weekends.

Practical tips

  • Getting there: The Gimpo Goldline runs from Gimpo Airport Station, and buses from the Seoul side link the port. A taxi from a station to Daemyeong Port is the simplest option.
  • Fresh fish: Sashimi is best in cooler months. Check with staff about the day's catch.
  • Allergies: Sauces and broths may contain wheat and soy, snack bars use wheat and egg, and jjajang and other Chinese-Korean sauces contain wheat and soy.

Every restaurant below has a video on its EatHub page. They make it easy to choose between the fish houses and the snack bars.
