Most first trips to Busan stay by the sea. Geumjeong-gu (금정구), at the northern end of Metro Line 1, is where the city meets its mountain. There's a major Buddhist temple, a vast stone fortress along the ridgeline, and one of Korea's liveliest university neighbourhoods at the bottom of the hill.
What to see
- Beomeosa Temple (범어사) — founded in 678 by the monk Uisang, it's one of the great temples of the southeast. Walk up through the Iljumun (one-pillar gate) and the old stone steps, and visit in spring for wisteria in the valley or autumn for maples. The Seongbo Museum holds the temple's treasures.
- Geumjeongsanseong Fortress (금정산성) — with walls stretching roughly 17 km along Geumjeongsan's ridges, it's often described as the largest mountain fortress in Korea. The East Gate area is the easiest to reach, and the ridge walk between gates gives views over the whole city.
- Sanseong Village (산성마을) — a small village inside the fortress, known for its country restaurants and Geumjeongsanseong makgeolli. This village rice wine was the first to be officially designated a traditional folk liquor, in 1980.
- Busan National University (PNU) area — Jangjeon-dong's streets are full of cheap restaurants, cafés and bookshops.

How to plan the day
Take Line 1 to Beomeosa Station and a short bus ride up to the temple in the morning. Hike from the temple to the fortress's North Gate (about an hour), then follow the walls toward Sanseong Village for makgeolli and lunch. Buses run back down to Oncheonjang in Dongnae. End the day with dinner in the PNU area, one stop from Oncheonjang.

- Makgeolli is strong-tasting and easy to overdo before a downhill walk. Pace yourself.
