Gwangalli Beach, Busan: Sea Views, Cafés, and Where to Eat in Suyeong

If Haeundae is Busan's headline beach, Gwangalli (광안리) is the one locals actually hang out at. The 1.4-kilometer crescent of sand looks straight out at the Gwangan Bridge, which lights up after dark, and the streets one block back are packed with cafés, izakayas, and restaurants rather than big hotels. It's a place to eat slowly, walk the sand, and watch the bridge — and it sits in Suyeong-gu, one of the densest dining districts in the whole city.

Why Gwangalli over Haeundae

Both beaches are lovely, but they have different energy. Haeundae is grander and more polished; Gwangalli is younger, cheaper, and more about the night view. The beachfront here is a wall of low-rise cafés and bars with second-floor windows angled at the bridge, and the back streets (toward Namcheon-dong) hide some of Busan's best small restaurants. If you want a meal with a view followed by a walk, this is the spot.

What to eat here

Gwangalli rewards grazing across a few categories:

• Fresh beef and Korean BBQ. Suyeong has well-regarded hanwoo and saengsogogi spots where you grill premium Korean beef at the table — a Busan splurge that costs less than the same meal in Seoul.
• Raw fish and seafood. This is the coast, so hoe (sliced raw fish) and seafood stews are everywhere. The Millak raw-fish town is a short walk up the beach for a classic Busan seafood night.
• Comfort food and home-style meals. Loach soup (chueotang), hearty baekban set meals, and other everyday Korean dishes fill the back streets, perfect when you want something warm and cheap.
• Tonkatsu and Japanese-leaning spots. Busan's proximity to Japan shows up in excellent katsu and izakaya cooking around the beach.
• Cafés with a view. The beachfront café scene is the whole point in the afternoon — coffee, a window seat, and the bridge.

How to plan a Gwangalli day

A simple rhythm works well: coffee and the sea in the afternoon, an early dinner in the back streets before the dinner rush, then a walk along the sand once the Gwangan Bridge lights come on (the bridge runs a light show in the evening). Weekends get busy after 6 p.m., so eat early or book ahead.

• Back streets beat the beachfront for food. The beachfront is best for cafés and views; walk one or two blocks inland for the better restaurants.
• Getting there. Gwangan Station (Line 2) drops you a few minutes from the sand.
• Pair it with Namcheon. The Namcheon-dong side has a neighborhood feel and its own little seaside market worth a wander.
