Chuncheon (춘천) is the easiest food day-trip from Seoul: about an hour on the ITX or subway line, set among lakes and low mountains in Gangwon. It's the kind of trip where the meal is the destination, because Chuncheon is the undisputed home of dak-galbi — and the gateway to the famously pretty Nami Island.

Two dishes that define the city

Chuncheon is a one-two punch of signature dishes:

  • Dak-galbi (닭갈비). Chunks of chicken stir-fried on a big flat griddle at your table with cabbage, sweet potato, tteok (rice cake), and a sweet-spicy gochujang sauce. It's communal, cheap, and addictive. There's a whole "Dak-galbi Alley" in town devoted to it.
  • Makguksu (막국수). Cold buckwheat noodles, either in a chilled broth or mixed with a tangy-spicy sauce — the perfect counterpoint to the heat of the dak-galbi. Locals often order both together.

The classic move: order dak-galbi for the table, and when the griddle is nearly empty, have them fry rice (bokkeumbap) in the leftover sauce. Add a bowl of makguksu on the side. That's the full Chuncheon meal.

Nami Island and the lakes

Most travelers pair the meal with Nami Island (남이섬), the half-moon island famous for its tree-lined avenues that turn gold and red in autumn (and snowy in winter). It's reached by a short ferry from Gapyeong, just before Chuncheon. The wider area is lake country — the Soyang and Uiam lakes give the city its calm, watery feel — so a Chuncheon day often mixes a walk by the water with a big lunch.

How to plan a Chuncheon trip

Keep it simple: take the train out in the morning, do Nami Island or a lakeside walk, then eat dak-galbi for a late lunch or early dinner before heading back. The town center and Dak-galbi Alley are easy to navigate on foot. Beyond the two signatures, Chuncheon also has good grilled-meat and home-style spots if you want variety.

Open the EatHub map to see which dak-galbi and noodle houses are near the station or the alley, and check the menu and video first. Some of the restaurants below have a video on their EatHub page so you can preview the griddle setup and portion sizes.

Practical tips

  • Dak-galbi is for sharing. It's usually ordered per person with a two-person minimum; the more the merrier.
  • Finish with fried rice. Don't skip the bokkeumbap step — it's the best part.
  • Autumn is peak Nami. The tree avenues are spectacular in fall foliage season, but also the most crowded.
  • Getting there. The ITX-Cheongchun and the Gyeongchun subway line both run from Seoul; Gapyeong (for Nami) is on the same line.

Chuncheon is proof that a single dish can be worth the trip. Ride out, walk the lakes or the island, and use the list below to find the griddle that's waiting.
