Gangdong-gu is the last district before the Han River leaves Seoul, sitting across the water from Guri and just east of Jamsil. It's residential, green, and almost completely off the visitor map — and it holds one of the oldest human settlements ever found in Korea.
What to see
- Amsa-dong Prehistoric Settlement. A Neolithic village site on the riverbank, occupied around 4,000 BC, with reconstructed pit houses and a museum of what was dug out of the ground here. It's the deepest layer of Seoul's history and it costs almost nothing to visit.
- Gwangnaru Hangang Park. A long riverside park with bike paths, a windsurfing area, and — unusually for Seoul — a lot of undeveloped riverbank. The path connects west to Jamsil and east out of the city.
- Gildong Ecological Park. A managed wetland and woodland reserve inside the city, free to enter and deliberately kept quiet. Good for birds, and a genuine break from Seoul's density.
- Godeoksan and the Seoul Trail. Low wooded hills on the district's eastern edge, with a signposted section of the Seoul Trail running through them.

What to eat
Gangdong eats like a neighborhood, not a destination. Around Cheonho, Gildong, and Amsa stations there's a dense population of grill houses, seafood restaurants, and snack shops that survive on regulars.
- Grilled pork and beef. The district's charcoal restaurants are the reason most people from neighboring areas cross over. Expect thick cuts, good kimchi, and no queue.
- Hoe and seafood. Gangdong has an unusually strong raw-fish scene for an inland district, plus steamed and braised seafood pots.
- Tteokbokki and bunsik. Old snack shops around the markets, several of them local legends.
- Pojangmacha. Indoor tented bars where the drinking food is the menu.
- Baekban and jjigae. The cheap everyday lunch, done properly.
Making a day of it
An easy version: start at Amsa-dong in the morning, walk west along Gwangnaru Hangang Park with the river on your right, and cut inland at Cheonho for lunch. If the weather is good, rent a bike — this stretch of the river path is one of the least crowded in Seoul.
Gangdong also works as a quiet base: it's three stops from Jamsil on Line 8 and connects straight into central Seoul on Line 5, with hotel prices well below the center.
Practical tips
- Getting there: Cheonho Station (Lines 5, 8) is the hub; Amsa Station (Line 8) for the prehistoric site; Gildong Station (Line 5) for the ecological park.
- The Amsa-dong site closes Mondays.
- Gildong Ecological Park limits daily visitors and prefers advance booking at busy times.
- The riverside has very little shade. Summer afternoons are brutal; go early or late.
- This is a dinner district. Lunch options are thinner than the evening.
