Gamcheon & Dadaepo: The Painted Village and the Best Sunset in Busan

Saha-gu is the southwestern corner of Busan, where the Nakdong River finally reaches the sea. It contains the single most photographed place in the city and one of its least-visited great beaches, and they're twenty minutes apart.

Gamcheon Culture Village

Gamcheon is a hillside of small houses stacked in terraces, painted in pastels, threaded with alleys too narrow for cars. It was built by refugees and members of a religious community who arrived during the Korean War, and it stayed poor for decades. In 2009 an arts project painted it and installed sculptures along the lanes; it is now one of Korea's most recognizable images.

Two things worth saying plainly. First, it is genuinely beautiful — the view across the terraces from the observation points is not an exaggeration. Second, around 8,000 people live there, in houses with thin walls, and the alleys are their front doors. Buy the village map, follow the marked route, don't photograph through windows, and keep your voice down.

Dadaepo

At the very end of Line 1, Dadaepo Beach is wide, shallow, and — because the Nakdong deposits sand here — enormous at low tide. It faces due west, which makes it the only beach in Busan with a proper sunset, and the Sunset Fountain of Dreams beside it runs music-and-light shows on summer evenings. Molundae, the wooded headland at the southern end, has a short coastal walk.

What to eat

Saha is a residential and industrial district, which means the food is priced for people who live here:

• Hoe (raw fish). The district has proper neighborhood raw-fish restaurants, plus the seafood restaurants near Dadaepo. Busan style: thin-sliced white fish, sesame oil, perilla leaves, then maeuntang from the bones.
• Tonkatsu. Busan's katsu culture is unusually strong — proximity to Japan plus a long history of Japanese residents — and Saha has well-regarded specialists.
• Jjajangmyeon and jjamppong from long-running Chinese-Korean restaurants.
• Grilled beef. Charcoal hanwoo restaurants at prices Haeundae would find implausible.
• Yangnyeom tongdak. Sweet-spicy fried chicken from old neighborhood shops, sold whole and eaten with beer.

How to plan the day

Gamcheon in the morning (before the tour groups and while the light is still soft), lunch down the hill, then Line 1 to Dadaepo for the afternoon and the sunset. Both are at the western end of the city, so do them together rather than crossing back and forth.

Practical tips

• Getting there: Gamcheon — Toseong Station (Line 1), then the small green bus 1-1, 2 or 2-2 up the hill. Dadaepo — Dadaepo Beach Station (Line 1), the last stop.
• Gamcheon's alleys are steep and stepped. Not suitable for wheels of any kind.
• The village is a neighborhood. Residents have asked visitors repeatedly to keep quiet in the early morning and evening. Please do.
• Dadaepo's tide goes out a long way. Check the tide table if you want water rather than sand flats.
• The fountain shows run in summer and stop in cold months.
